At Highland County Humane Society our volunteers provide invaluable support to our sheltered animals and staff. We believe that every helping hand makes a significant difference in the lives of our animals, and we are constantly seeking enthusiastic volunteers to join our team.

At the heart of Highland County lies a compassionate sanctuary for our four-legged friends. As a proud non-profit 501(c)3 animal shelter, we are committed to providing a nurturing and safe haven for dogs and cats as they embark on their journey to finding loving forever homes.
Since our inception in 1969, our shelter has stood as a testament to community-driven animal welfare. Managed by a dedicated team of full-time staff and a passionate Board of Directors, we continuously strive to make a difference in the lives of animals and the people who love them. We understand the importance of responsible pet ownership, which is why we offer a range of services including low-cost spay/neuter programs and managed intake for pets in need in Highland County and surrounding areas, ensuring space and resources are optimally utilized.
What can you do as a volunteer?
- Kennel and cat house maintenance — help us maintain a clean and healthy environment for our animals.
- Dog walking — spend time walking our dogs, providing them with exercise and fresh air.
- Yard work — assist in maintaining our outdoor spaces to create a pleasant environment for animals and visitors.
- Animal socialization — engage with our animals, helping them become more comfortable and sociable and increasing their chances of adoption.
